Spirits of the Air is an energetic and airy original watercolor painting on canvas. Two hummingbirds seek out nectar and the pleasures of free flight in the cool Colorado mountain air, amidst the blooming delphinium flowers.

All summer I have the opportunity to witness the exciting return, flight, feeding, fighting and wooing of the hummingbirds that pass through our mountain town. When I agreed to do some plein air painting outside Portfolio Gallery, in Breckenridge, my hummingbird companions seemed to be the perfect subject. I wanted to use expressive brushwork to capture the movement and busy energy of these tiny birds in flight, with a lively composition and the delicate colors and robust blossoms of spring and summer. I hope you can feel the flowing air currents and smell the fresh air.

I used the traditional watercolor technique of preserving bare paper or canvas for the the white parts of the painting, and allowed the natural dripping and splatters that are part of the flow and movement of watercolor, particularly when painting outdoors and with the canvas upright.
