Description
Watching You
*****
Don’t be alarmed, but I think that fox is watching you. A red fox, hidden and alert peers from the snowy aspen forest around the time of sunset. In the Colorado woods, animals see us a lot more often than we see them, and it sometimes feels as though the aspen trees are watching us, as well.
*****
The red fox is a species of animal with a wide range, and the admirable and enviable ability to adapt and survive in a variety of environments, both rural and increasingly urban. In this and many ways, foxes and humans are similar.
*****
I have always been attracted to their playful demeanor, gorgeous red fur and strange resemblance to both cats and dogs. Any time I catch sight of a sleek fox or playful fox family I feel the delight of a child.
*****
The painting, as currently offered, is professionally framed in an attractive black and gold, wide frame with a cream fabric liner, and no glass. Where’s The Glass?
As an alternative to framing with glass, this watercolor painting has been sealed with Dorland’s Wax Medium, a museum-quality, matte finish protective coating, which will prevent fading and protect against moisture and dust. It will not yellow or turn brown with age, and it may be cleaned with water. I prefer the look of the art without the reflections and sense of distance created by a piece of glass between the viewer and the artwork, however, if framing with glass is desired at a later date, glass may also be used with this painting, to good effect.
*****
Throughout world literature the fox is a common character, although different places may have different feelings about this tricky critter. I especially like the Japanese mythology in this regard.
In Japanese mythology, the kitsune are fox-like spirits possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others, other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.
The fox can also be found in the folklore of the Celtic people, Native Americans, China, Korea, Greece and throughout Europe, the Arab world........
