That Strange Frozen Place Where You Keep What Is Left
A frozen blue scene of icy, mountainous wilderness and a few dark trees contained in a square format, express a chilly world of silence and untouched spaces. Jagged, craggy peaks, rocky and barren jutting into a misty sky before the shimmer and glow of a full moon lead to an exploration of a mysterious longing. Why is it that my attempts to paint imaginary landscapes somewhere out there, keep turning into something else entirely, in here? Time and distance offer us so little, if not protection against that .

When it is obvious to me that a particular artist has served as an influence for a painting of mine, I try to give credit. In this case, the artists Ted Trujillo (who I knew for many years, but with whom I am no longer in touch) and Bobby Bales, his brother, have had an impact that is visible in this piece. To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always. Color thrills me. Texture delights. I hope with each work to retain the clarity of what I see, and bring that into view for others.
