Here Comes The Sun King was painted live, en plein air, at Portfolio Gallery in Breckenridge, during a happy hour event, and you can feel the singing energy of the warm fall afternoon, and cooling evening, as I spontaneously made color choices, developed texture, and accepted that this particular watercolor mixed media painting was going to have a lot of exciting drips. The paint was really flowing.

Our changing aspen leaves and the leaf peepers they annually inspire, are part of the reason my state is referred to as Colorful Colorado. There is nothing to compare to the glowing gold, on a sunny day, with the aspens radiating light and sparkling in the breeze. The trunks of aspen trees are white, and waxy, making them the perfect surface to reflect all the other colors in the local environment. What's more, some trees stand straight and tall, while others twist and bend as though dancing at some vibrant outdoor festival, under the unique and indescribable candy blue of the Colorado sky.
