Painting - Ink On Watercolor Paper
Description
A black and white giraffe drawn with ink on watercolor paper. This haughty giraffe has a supermodel pout to go with her long neck.
*****
I drew this as part of the preparations for designing a piece of art for the Inspired Arts/ America Scores organization, which brings poetry and soccer to children in schools. This is not the final piece, but may be used for part of it, or just to help develop the overall idea. Over the next few weeks I may be adding more of these, as I work toward creating the final product.
*****
Interested artists choose one of many poems submitted by children in the program. They then create a piece of art inspired by the poem, which is to be donated and sold at a local auction to help support the program financially.
*****
I think this is a wonderful program. I enjoyed making a contribution and attending the auction last year, and I am already looking forward to this year's event.
*****
My chosen poem this year is:
My Self
by: Christopher C., Age 9
Newlon Elementary
*****
My hair is spiky as a porcupine
My ears are as pointy as an elfs
My body is as strong as a wrestler
I am tall like a giant
My arms are as strong as a big gorilla
My neck is as long as a giraffes
My eyes are as small as Pluto

America SCORES inspires urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.
*****
America SCORES Denver, an affiliate of the national organization, is a recreationally-linked education program dedicated to translating the values of leadership, teamwork and communication to nearly 300 at-risk young girls and boys in west Denver. We do this by providing physical activities through the sport of soccer, and literacy lessons through creative writing, every day after school in ten public elementary schools. Soccer, poetry and service-learning activities are used as tools to emphasize good decision-making, discipline and positive self-expression.

Why is SCORES Important?
In Colorado 1/3 of school-age children are left unsupervised after school. Children who do not take part in after-school programs score significantly lower on aptitude tests and very poorly in classroom assignments.
Over 65 percent of urban children do not participate in extracurricular activities that involve any form of exercise. In 2005, nearly 29 percent of children in Colorado were categorized as overweight or obese.
Only 53 percent of students in Colorado graduate from High School. Of those that do, 40 percent are only reading at 4th grade level.
*****
Studies around the nation have proven that America SCORES works. Children in after-school programs:
Demonstrate higher school attendance and improve their overall performance on standardized tests as well as in subject classes
Show improvement in self-confidence and social skills, the ability to maintain self-control and avoid conflicts
Are two times less likely to use drugs and one-third less likely to become teen parents
Are three times more physically active than children not in SCORES programs
*****
Denvers 35 teachers and coaches our SCORES Corps receive training in the areas of creative writing, service-learning and soccer coaching. We recognize that after-school teachers and coaches are important providers of services for our children and invite them to work with America SCORES Denver, using our tools and resources to effectively change kids lives for the better.
