You Asked The Right Person

A minimal composition of a silhouetted crow or raven painted onto page 56 of an old book entitled, entertainingly, High In The Rockies, You Asked The Right Person is a painting using one of my favorite subjects and up cycling part of a vintage book. The title is taken from an expression in the text. This is a black and white, more cropped version of the colored original, available only as a print.

The original text is High In The Rockies, by Maude Linstrom Frandsen, published in 1957. I sometimes enjoy the challenges and rewards of painting repurposed paper from outdated, aging, yellowing and falling apart books and sheet music. The paper proves ideal for a warm, natural appearance that compliments natural subjects, although it is tricky to work on.

To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always. Color thrills me. Texture delights. I hope with each work to retain the clarity of what I see, and bring that into view for others.
