That Place is a gritty, moody, simplified study of a seascape executed on the inside paper cover of a watercolor block, which happens to have a most intriguing texture, and accepts water differently than watercolor paper. The paper of the original is warped from the water and a bit worn and scratched from being carried around outdoors and serving the intended purpose of protecting the paper inside. I think that is part of the appeal on this one. Sometimes I just need to do something that is intuitive and completely unrefined, with the goal of capturing a fleeting feeling. I used a limited palette of only three colors of paint and the white of the paper to depict the clouds, land and water that make up the composition. Watercolor is uniquely suited to sketches such as this, portraying the natural elements and the moods they evoke. And the paper cover itself was saved from its destiny in the recycling bin, so in a very small way this painting contributes to a healthier environment.
To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always. Color thrills me. Texture delights. I hope with each work to retain the clarity of what I see, and bring that into view for others.
