A glittering cool-toned, blue dragonfly rests lightly on reeds. This simple painting was inspired by asian style art, as part of my interest in learning more about sumi-e, and applying the techniques and brushwork to watercolor paintings. I do also take great joy in watching dragonflies hover, swoop and hunt. In Japan, dragonflies are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness, and they often appear in art and literature, especially haiku.

The original is painted on a watercolor greeting card suitable either to be framed or given as a gift. It is painted on high quality watercolor paper, and the inside is blank, waiting for your inspiration, to include a message or perhaps even a haiku.

This is not, of course, a traditional sumi-e, or ink wash painting, as I have used watercolor paints and paper, as opposed to ink and rice paper. Truly, it is more inspired by such works.

To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always. Color thrills me. Texture delights. I hope with each work to retain the clarity of what I see, and bring that into view for others.
