A conversation with a friend:
Friend, "Is that owl on acid?"
Me, "No, it's on a plum."

Now, I can't tell you why I felt compelled to paint a blue owl sitting carefully on a ripe plum. I just did. But if you come up with a deeper, more meaningful or subconscious explanation, please let me know.

What I can tell you:
Owls are among my favorite subjects, They fascinate me with their mysterious appearance, nocturnal activity and long history as a symbol in word mythology and culture.
Owls are a group of birds that belong to the order Strigiformes, constituting 200 extant bird of prey species. Most are solitary and nocturnal, with some exceptions (e.g., the Northern Hawk Owl). Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and other birds, although a few species specialize in hunting fish. To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always. Color thrills me. Texture delights. I hope with each work to retain the clarity of what I see, and bring that into view for others.
