Description
A young, female American Robin perches near some berries, all puffed up on a chilly day near the end of winter. What is it about humans that makes us find the puffed up feathers so darn cute, when the bird is really just insulating itself against the cold?
*****
The robin is a common, but popular, large songbird. It charms us with its cheerful breast of orange and red, its distinctive song and eagerness to appear anywhere soil has been overturned, in search of worms with little regard for or fear of nearby humans. We see them regularly here in Colorado, and I believe some variety can be found on every continent.
*****
Perhaps we are also instinctively drawn to anything signaling the change of seasons and a return to warm, comfortable weather.

I enjoy painting birds, and this one, being my first robin, was painted in preparation for a commission involving the robin as subject.
