Description
Wild At Heart
*****
An expressive and fiery feathered, small red owl perches on an anatomical human heart, amidst an intense red background. This is not your grandmother's watercolor, unless you have a most unusual grandmother.
*****
This intense red owl painting was specifically prepared for an entry into the local Denver show Redhanded &, and awaits jurying. Paintings entered in this show are required to be at least 50% red, and square in format. Both requirements make for a real challenge, as not everything lends itself to a square setting, and even a little red is an intense, powerful and emotion inspiring or attention getting effect in a painting. I did not want to go for an obvious subject, such as roses and other flowers, bell peppers or tomatoes, strawberries and watermelons, or even a fiery sunset. I do love the velvety quality of red, and I enjoy the modern feeling a square format can give to a piece.
*****
I love to paint owls, and beyond certain starting parameters such as red and square, they tend to dictate, themselves, how they want to be. The question of what each particular owl will be perched on is always an intuitive process. Doubtless there is meaning to it, but I don't think it is always a conscious decision.
*****
Likewise, the expression the owl takes is generally not planned, so much as it just develops during the painting process. I try to just work with what comes through me in cases like this.
*****
The owl is a powerful spirit animal, and red is quite a dramatic color. I am excited to hear your thoughts. What do you think this painting represents?

According to:
http://www.popstartats.com/harry-styles-tattoos/arm-anatomical-heart/
While universally-accepted heart symbol tattoos tend to represent love and passion, a tattoo of a real human heart is far more deliberate and tends to have deeper, more spiritual undertones. Some people get anatomical heart tattoos to symbolize empathy and charity, for example, while others opt for a scientific image of a heart that stands for God or the physical, spiritual and emotional center of being. According to Egyptian practice, the heart is the last organ left in the body, and is meant to be light as a feather, not weighed down by untruths or misdeeds.
