An alert owl in mostly cool tones of blue, green and purple with contrasting yellow has been painted onto page 28 of an old book entitled, entertainingly, High In The Rockies. Each time I paint an owl, a different personality presents itself during the process. This one, to me, seems alert and curious, much like the baby owl I recently watched, as it simultaneously watched me, at Bear Creek Lake Park, in Lakewood, Colorado. Some believe owls to be messengers from the other world, and they do have a mysterious intensity to them.

Who Is That is a painting in which I used one of my favorite subjects, while up cycling part of a vintage book. On this particular occasion I have discovered that Dr. Ph. Martin’s liquid watercolor paints, being highly concentrated and intense, can be applied directly to the vintage paper without losing a great deal of intensity, although the paint does move differently and with less fluidity than it would on sized watercolor paper, and is therefore a challenge to work with.

The original text is High In The Rockies, by Maude Linstrom Frandsen, published in 1957, a self described enrichment text, addressing Colorado history in a story telling format, in a very vintage, gee-whiz, kind of style. I sometimes enjoy the challenges and rewards of painting repurposed paper from outdated, aging, yellowing and falling apart books and sheet music. The paper proves ideal for a warm, natural appearance that compliments natural subjects, although it is tricky to work on.

Up cycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.
The first recorded use of the term up cycling was by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in an article by Thornton Kay of Salvo in 1994.
