Title
Sumi-e Penguin Dance
Artist
Beverley Harper Tinsley
Medium
Painting - Watercolor And Graphite
Description
It is as simple as this. Penguins are expressive and cute, and it was fun rendering them in a sumi-e style. This black and white painting of two penguins in a pose reminiscent of the dancing on Charlie Brown holiday specials would be a fun addition to any room in your house, especially, perhaps, a child's room.
*****
This is not, of course, a traditional sumi-e, or ink wash painting, as I have used watercolor paints and paper, as opposed to ink and rice paper. Truly, it is more inspired by such works.
*****
Penguins (order Sphenisciformes, family Spheniscidae) are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have counter shaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have evolved into flippers. Most penguins feed on krill, fish, squid and other forms of sea life caught while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their lives on land and half in the oceans.
*****
Although all penguin species are native to the southern hemisphere, they are not found only in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few species of penguin live so far south. Several species are found in the temperate zone, and one species, the Galpagos Penguin, lives near the equator.
