Steller's Jay On Aspen

A Colorado Steller's Jay, richly robed in various shades of blue, perches on an aspen branch, soaking up some autumnal sun. The fall leaves have begun changing to warm gold and red, and cold weather cannot be far behind. Ever alert, the mischievous mountain jay is on the lookout for food.

September and October are the months when the people of Colorado drive to the mountains to view the vivid changing colors of the aspen trees. I am lucky enough to be living in the mountains, so I don't have to go anywhere, or at least not far, to view this spectacle. There are aspen trees just outside my studio windows, and I am perpetually surrounded by blue jays looking for a handout.

To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always.
