Description
So the wind won't blow it all away
*****
A single white bloom of Magnolia Stellata twists and curls open against a warm, glowing backdrop of sun baked and crumbling old bricks. This is a very casual painting done en plein air in my backyard. Every year this tree bursts a thousand dancing white stars into bloom right around my birthday, April 1st, tiny flags demarcating a particular place and time. The thick, fleshy petals are like some sort of sensual sea creatures. The fragrance is charming, and at night the whole show seems to glow in the dark, a quiet moment of glory on the edge of a changing season. Eventually, the wind comes, and blows it all away.
****
The slightly unfinished quality of this painting, with unpainted edges, and barely delineated brick suits my own sense of the ephemeral qualities of the natural world, and our place in it, a thing one is, rather unavoidably, driven to consider, at least once a year.

I am enjoying viewing this image Beverley and much taken with your comments about the meaning of the unfinished edges the cyclical nature of the Magnolia blooms. Very captivating! Congratulations on being featured in "Images That Excite You."
