Description
School
Three fish painted in a variation on Asian sumi-e style, in warm-toned watercolor, swim beneath orange, red and gold maple leaves in an Asian pond. I painted these fish as part of my preparation for a more complicated commissioned piece, and found myself painting a school, as it were. Not too shocking, as it is fall, and school is newly in session. To me, it seems as though the larger fish is offering instruction to the younger ones.
According to Wikipedia:
Koi,or more specifically nishikigoi, literally brocaded carp, are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means affection or love; koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan.
The goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) is a freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae of order Cypriniformes. It was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish.
A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a less-colorful carp (Carassius auratus) native to east Asia. It was first domesticated in China more than a thousand years ago, and several distinct breeds have since been developed. Goldfish breeds vary greatly in size, body shape, fin configuration and coloration (various combinations of white, yellow, orange, red, brown, and black are known).
