Description
Rocks in The Stream is a loose, wet, watercolor painting of a simple subject; stones in water. Lately I am drawn to natural, earthy subjects that, in their simplicity, have so much to offer, and which create a certain sense of peace……a small portion of a river, a single feather, broken shells, sunlight on a rock, things that, in our distraction, we never notice or don’t really see.
And thinking about rivers, and small pieces of rivers reminded me of an excerpt from a favorite piece of writing/storytelling I wanted to revisit, so I include that here.
It certainly speaks to me.
"There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are torn apart and will suffer greatly.
"Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water. And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, Least of all ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
"The time for the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves! Banish the word struggle from you attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
"We are the ones we've been waiting for."
For a more complete version of this writing, see http://www.communityworks.info/hopi.htm, or any one of a number of sites that come up when googled. It has been attributed to an unnamed Hopi elder or group of elders, or possibly Thomas Banyacya Sr. or June Jordan. Honestly, I have no idea who deserves credit, although I have tried to find out, but that does not dilute the power of the statement in my experience, so I hope it speaks to you.
