Red Spotted Purple 1
This painting of a red spotted purple admiral butterfly was painted based on a photo sent to me by my mother-in-law Bobbie, who lives in Virginia. These beautiful, deep blue butterflies don't live in the mountains of Colorado, and I don't believe I've yet seen one in person. Well, maybe at the butterfly pavilion.

This is my second painting based on the same photo, but this one is much smaller and closer to a natural butterfly size. Also, I had the opportunity its to experiment with a nice rich, deep purple background, and on the original, you can see the iridescent watercolor paint I included in my design to add a certain powdery, glittering sheen, such as real butterflies have, in silver and blue.

It is not easy to decide upon a background for something that is already as beautiful as these butterflies. In this case, I chose to paint a simple, loose and flowing background that is rich in color and a bit metallic in places, but still allows for the butterfly to be the star of the show. I did want to create a sense of flow and movement , and I chose to paint wetly, to emphasize blooms, so it is clearly a watercolor painting.
