Description
Lucy
*****
This is a detail from a larger painting, Lucy and Lula. Lucy and Lula are our beloved cats. Lula was a rescue cat, saved from wildfires in Montana and sent to Denver to find a new home, with me. She was the most loving animal I have ever met, and a true survivor, as well. She had a powerful purr, and an old soul.
*****
Lucy had been abandoned by her owner and appeared at the home of my uncle Don, who insured my parents made a space for her in their home. She had so much personality.
*****
Lucy lived with my parents and Lula lived for years with, first, only me, and later my family, but went to stay with my parents after we discovered that another cat who lived with us was intimidating her, and was simply not going to stop. Lula became fast friends with Lucy, almost instantly. When I first started working on the drawing for this painting, both Lucy and Lula were still alive, and now, years later, I have finally finished my painting.
*****
In creating this painting, I really enjoyed the challenges of showing the spark of color I invariably see in the fur of a black cat, and also of depicting the variable textures and colors of fur, both long and short. It was also my express goal to reveal the unique personality of each of these beautiful souls, through their characteristic expressions. Finally, is there anything more beautiful than cat eyes?
*****
The original painting is a gift to my parents, but perhaps you have also loved a black cat or a rag doll cat, and will appreciate a print of these remarkable, adorable felines.
