Description
Fantastical green fairy mushrooms glow in a magical mist along the mossy forest floor. These mushrooms were painted in honor of the annual Telluride mushroom festival, in the Colorado mountains, and the fantastical and fun people who gather there.

Looking through various dream dictionaries, it seems there are many interpretations for the mushroom image. It could symbolize relationship difficulties, unhealthy desires, or foolishness in amassing wealth.Other interpretations include the mushroom as a symbol of male fertility, a symbol of the human soul, knowledge or enlightenment, or a symbol of magic.
Mushrooms can also represent different things to individuals depending on their preferences. Do you like mushrooms? Do you hate them? Were you ever poisoned by one? Your interpretation of the dream image should be personal. Thinking about how the image relates to your current life situations can help with the interpretation.
Mushrooms as a Phallic Symbol
According to Freud, vegetables represent a sexual image in dreams depending on their shape. The names of certain types of mushrooms evoke this association. For example, Phallus Impudicus, commonly known as stinkhorns, means "rude or shameless penis". Another name for a mushroom was "Satan's Member".In Chinese interpretations the mushroom is a symbol of male fertility, long life happiness and rebirth.
Mushrooms as a Spiritual Symbol
Jung, on the other hand, saw vegetables as a symbol of personal growth and spirituality. This makes sense because they come from the soil which is associated with the cycle of death and rebirth. The mushroom can be a symbol of the human soul. Dreaming of one can mean you are receiving knowledge and enlightenment.
Eating mushrooms, as one knows, can be a dangerous business as some mushrooms are poisonous. Besides death, eating them can also trigger hallucinogenic effects. For example, Lewis Carroll's rumoured experiments with mushrooms might have led to his descriptions of size and time changes in Alice in Wonderland. So in dreams, a mushrooms might be an image for a gateway into these kinds of experiences.
Superstitions Regarding Mushrooms
Traditional interpretations of seeing mushrooms in your dreams means that you are unwise in hastily amassing wealth. Eating them signifies humiliation and disgraceful love. If a young woman dreams of mushrooms it foretells that she will be defiant in the pursuit of foolish pleasures.
Mushrooms can also be a magical symbol. Fairy rings were said to be formed by circular arrangements of mushrooms. Going inside the circle would be dangerous for humans. European folktales abound with descriptions of elves sitting on toadstools, witches hunting for a powerful form of fungi and magical creatures that dwell beneath the mushroom's umbrella.
Because mushrooms can be a symbol meaning many different things, it is up to the dreamer to decided which interpretation makes sense. Sometimes, the image might serve as the gateway to self-knowledge or other times, the dreamer might be craving sexual intimacy. But sometimes, a mushroom might just be a mushroom, a pungent, earthy vegetable that one likes to have in risotto.
