Description
Big Daddy
A single, large koi fish painted in watercolor, in a variation on Asian sumi-e style, in warm tones and contrasting deep indigo blue, swims in a simple, bold composition. I painted this fish as part of my preparation for a more complicated commissioned piece, and enjoyed it so much, I cant wait to paint more. These flowing, free forms are so satisfying; it feels as though my brush is singing.
According to Wikipedia:
Koi,or more specifically nishikigoi, literally brocaded carp, are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means affection or love; koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan.
The goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) is a freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae of order Cypriniformes. It was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish.
A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a less-colorful carp (Carassius auratus) native to east Asia. It was first domesticated in China more than a thousand years ago, and several distinct breeds have since been developed. Goldfish breeds vary greatly in size, body shape, fin configuration and coloration (various combinations of white, yellow, orange, red, brown, and black are known).
