This simple sumi-e style painting of a Northern Cardinal among some green leaves was rendered in the Asian, minimalist painting style of sumi-e. I painted it as part of a series exploring one subject, the cardinal, from different approaches. I have long admired Asian art and aesthetic principles, and especially enjoy the contrast between these and my other paintings, that have so much color, and far more detail. I also love the way practicing this art informs and enhances the other styles of art I make.

This is not, of course, a traditional sumi-e, or ink wash painting, as I have used watercolor paints and paper, as opposed to ink and rice paper. Truly, it is more inspired by such works.

To me, making art is about the stopping of time, as are so many of the things I most love doing. I don't believe in time as we know it. When I become engaged in creating something, I no longer feel subject to time's constricting whims. That is why I am driven to create. I love the light touch and thrilling chemistry of watercolor painting, the bold strokes possible in pastel work, the patterns I can create with an ink drawing, and learning something new, always. Color thrills me. Texture delights. I hope with each work to retain the clarity of what I see, and bring that into view for others.
