Description
A softly blended, colorful trio of psychedelic magic mushrooms in the foreground draws the eye, as the background undulates with softer, misty and more subtle mushroom forms. Are they further away , the ancestors, or just a vision? I was listening to the Jerry Garcia Band while working on this one.
*****
This piece was painted in honor of the annual Telluride Mushroom Festival, in the beautiful mountains of Colorado, where, annually, fungi enthusiasts gather to share knowledge, information, good times and their visions.

The Telluride Mushroom Festival (TMF) is excited to present an incredible opportunity to receive formal Certification in Mycoremediation from TMF, the most esteemed mycological festival in the world. The 32nd annual TMF, and the Mycoremediation Course, will take place August 15-18, 2013 in beautiful Telluride, Colorado and the surrounding San Juan Mountains. This year’s theme is ‘fungi as medicine’ for the planet and its people.
Mycoremediation, a form of bioremediation, is the process of using fungi to return an environment contaminated by pollutants to a less contaminated state. Fungi produce powerful enzymes that are capable of breaking down complex, toxic molecules and pathogenic organisms. Mushroom spawn can create a network and act as a living ‘filter’.
On May 6th, 2013 Telluride Mushroom Festival gained approval from the Telluride Open Space Commission (TOSC) to conduct a Five Year Study using Mycoremediation on Telluride’s iconic Valley Floor. TMF Director Scott Koch and Town of Telluride Program Director Lance McDonald have been working to identify local test sites that have not previously been scheduled for remediation. It is exciting for the town of Telluride to have the opportunity to utilize a non-traditional, natural, systems approach to remediate the negative impacts of mining in our landscape.
“Telluride Mushroom Festival is focused on bringing the most cutting edge remediation practices to Telluride. Since Telluride is at the top of the Colorado River watershed, it is essential that we take seriously our responsibility to remedy the impacts of our mining history and to inform the community of our practices and outcomes. The TMF Remediation Course offers people the unique opportunity to be a part of a project that will undoubtedly transform our local landscape for the better,” said TMF Director Scott Koch.
TMF offers presentations and workshops on all things mycological including Medicine, Identification, and Cultivation/Remediation. This year, those who formally focus on Cultivation & Remediation will have the opportunity to receive formal certification in Mycoremediation from the Telluride Mushroom Festival. Presentations and field workshops will focus on healing environmental systems with mycoremediation and mycofiltration, managing projects from start to finish, and specific cultivation practices. There are attendance requirements for those wishing to complete the certification.
