Description
The Obvious Path
The Obvious Path is a monochromatic local tone landscape painting in an indigo grey shade, depicting one of many possible locations in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and other states along the plains. A trail leads to the silhouetted line of trees, behind which a river likely runs, beneath a slightly moody sky.

I just finished reading Little House on the Prairie to my five year old daughter, and just maybe, that homestead had an influence on my choice of subject. I wanted to get a sense of place from the shapes and values, without using color.

Definition: In art, tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness of an area. Tone varies from the bright white of a light source through shades of gray to the deepest black shadows. How we perceive the tone of an object depends on its actual surface lightness or darkness, color and texture, the background and lighting. Tone is may be used broadly ('global tone') to denote the major planes of an object; realist artists use 'local tone' to accurately denote subtle changes within the plane.
