The song is Sweet By and By, and the painting is an example of a unique process in which watercolor is painted over a textured art medium onto actual vintage or antique pages of music or books that are no longer in use for their original purpose.

By upcycling or recyling parts of old, unused and sometimes damaged books and music, I can create unique art and also keep one fewer item from reaching a landfill. The background text makes for an exciting composition,and the natural yellowing or fading of the paper gives a dated, authentic look to the work.

In this case, the sheet music used is Sweet By and By, by J.P. Webster, taken from The Old Fashioned Revival Hour Songs No. 1, published in 1950. The original painting has deckled edges, and could look good either floated or under a mat when framed, depending on your personal style preferences. Parts of the surface of the page have been carefully treated with a top quality watercolor ground medium, to allow the surface to handle watercolor well and attain vibrant color as well as interesting textural effects not otherwise present in watercolor painting. The image is then hand-painted onto the treated surface and also untreated parts of the text, to integrate the background and foreground into a novel completed painting. The owner of this environmentally responsible work will be in possession of a truly unique art item and a great conversation starter.
