This is a black and white version of the original full color painting, available as prints.
The red fox is a species of animal with a wide range, and the admirable and enviable ability to adapt and survive in a variety of environments, both rural and increasingly urban. In this and many ways, foxes and humans are similar.

I have always been attracted to their playful demeanor, gorgeous red fur and strange resemblance to both cats and dogs. Any time I catch sight of a sleek fox or playful fox family I feel the delight of a child.

This particular fox had been sleeping deeply in my parents' backyard, on this particular day. This is how it appeared shortly after it awoke and notices that photographs were being taken. I had the opportunity to see the same fox both resting and while awake, on several occasions, and became enchanted.

Throughout world literature the fox is a common character, although different places may have different feelings about this tricky critter. I especially like the Japanese mythology in this regard.

In Japanese mythology, the kitsune are fox-like spirits possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others, other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.

The fox can also be found in the folklore of the Celtic people, Native Americans, China, Korea, Greece and throughout Europe, the Arab world........
