Amami or Sweetness

Description
Amami depicts delicate and vibrant plum blossoms, or ume, bursting open in spring with an intoxicating scent of sweetness, in fresh shades of pink, red, green, blue and yellow, on a knobby and rugged branch. The species is Prunus mume, and it is well loved for blooming in mid to late winter and early spring, January or February in Asia, sometimes during snowstorms.

It was my intention to approach this subject with an Asian sumi-e style painting, simple, elegant and expressive. This is not, of course, a traditional sumi-e, or ink wash painting, as I have used watercolor paints and paper, as opposed to ink and rice paper. Truly, it is more inspired by such works.

This painting would make a lovely and thoughtful gift, phone case or card for your beloved, or a family member this valentines day or mothers day or a birthday, especially during thie appropriate season.
A poem by Chinese poet Lin Bu celebrates this flowering tree.
Little Plum Blossom of Hill Garden
When everything has faded they alone shine forth,
encroaching on the charms of smaller gardens.
Their scattered shadows fall lightly on clear water,
their subtle scent pervades the moonlit dusk.
Snowbirds look again before they land,
butterflies would faint if they but knew.
Thankfully I can flirt in whispered verse,
I don't need a sounding board or winecup.
According to Wikipedia:
Japanese tradition holds that the ume functions as a protective charm against evil, so the ume is traditionally planted in the northeast of the garden, the direction from which evil is believed to come. The eating of the pickled fruit for breakfast is also supposed to stave off misfortune. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_mume - cite_note-lp-62
Wikipedia supplies a great deal more information about this wonderful flowering tree, for those with insatiable curiosity. It is really quite interesting reading.
