Description
A velvety, deep orange monarch butterfly rests peacefully for the moment on a large russula mushroom in a mossy colorado forest. Every time I go mushroom hunting with a friend, these are the sort I find the most, not edible, but sometimes quite lovely. This piece speaks to me in some ways of the nature of time. The lifespan of the butterfly and the appearance of the mushroom in this form are both so fleeting.

According to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russula
Around 750 worldwide species of mycorrhizal mushrooms compose the genus Russula. They are typically common, fairly large, and brightly colored making them one of the most recognizable genera among mycologists and mushroom collectors. Their distinguishing characteristics include a white to dark yellow spore print, brittle free white gills, and an absence of partial veil or volva tissue on the stem. Members of the related Lactarius genus have similar characteristics but emit a milky latex when their gills are broken. The genus was described by Christian Hendrik Persoon in 1796.
Russula means reddish.

The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871, where it is called the wanderer. It is resident in the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, and is found as an occasional migrant in Western Europe and a rare migrant in the United Kingdom. Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 8.910.2 cm (34 in). (The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller, and has an extra black stripe across the hind wing.) Female monarchs have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the androconium in the center of each hind wing. Males are also slightly larger than female monarchs.
The monarch is famous for its southward migration from Canada to Mexico and Baja California, and northward return in summer; which spans the life of three to four generations of the butterfly. The migration route was fully determined by Canadian entomologists Fred and Norah Urquhart after a 38-year search, aided by naturalists Kenneth C. Brugger and Catalina Trail who solved the final piece of the puzzle by identifying the butterflies' overwintering sites in Mexico. The discovery has been called "entomological discovery of the 20th century". An IMAX film, Flight of the Butterflies, tells the story of the long search by the Urquharts, Brugger and Trail to unlock the secret of the butterflies' migration.

Butterfly: a symbol metamorphosis and transformation
Did you know that according to scientific research, the butterfly is the only living being capable of changing entirely its genetic structure during the process of transformation: the caterpillars DNA is totally different from the butterflys! Those who have a butterfly as their totem animal may have a difficult childhood. Life lessons are revealed to the consciousness while in the womb of the mother the cocoon stage - and are completed when the caterpillar emerges into the butterfly and takes flight. Butterflies are symbols of freedom and creativity. They hold the gift of transformation, shape-shifting and soul evolution, and equally require courage to carry out the changes required in order to grow.
When butterfly shows up, make note of the most important issues confronting you at the moment. What state of change are you at in regard to them? You may need to find clarity in mental or emotional processes or organise projects, or figure out your next step in your internal growth. Maybe you are about to undergo a significant transformation. Examine which stage calls your attention first: the egg is the beginning, the birth of an idea; the larva is the decision to manifest something in the physical world; the cocoon has to do with going inside; the breaking of the cocoon is the creation and beauty shared with the world. They hold the gift of soul evolution
