Description
A Crack In Everything
I was listening to Leonard Cohen when I painted this piece, and it was very much inspired by his music and my intense feelings at this time and place we live in. The lyrics to the song, "Anthem" are below, and I'll let the painting and the song speak for me this time. Leonard Cohen died a few days after I painted this piece, but he generously left us one last, beautiful album to explore. I thank him.
*****
While many of my paintings are representational, I chose in this instance to do a purely abstract work, and found it very freeing. I enjoyed the opportunity to create a composition intuitively and based purely on emotion and gesture, and I hope you can find in it, a place of freedom for your own thoughts.
*****
I usually work in watercolor, but this time I wanted to try something different. I found joy in the texture I could create with the thicker paint and also by using a palette knife for much of the mark making, spontaneously adding color or texture as the painting progressed, until I knew, in some inexplicable way, that it was done. This painting is I'm a square format on a canvas, with painted edges, so it could be hung right away or framed first.

Anthem by Leonard Cohen
The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.
I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.
Ring the bells that still can ring ...
You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
